You think you choose what you see. You don't. For years now, an algorithm has been deciding which posts appear in your feed, which results sit at the top of your search, which articles you're recommended next. Not maliciously — consistently. By a single criterion that is rarely spoken aloud: maximum attention.
This is the actual architecture of the web we know today. Not hyperlinks. Not URLs. Not open protocols. Algorithms.
What a relevance score actually measures
When an algorithm decides what you see, it optimizes for one signal: engagement. Clicks, time on page, reactions, comments, shares. That sounds like a reasonable proxy for relevance. It isn't — it's a proxy for emotional activation. Content that triggers outrage, curiosity, or fear performs better than content that informs you calmly.
This isn't an algorithmic failure. It's algorithmic success. They do exactly what they were built to do — maximize attention. The problem is the target, not the execution.
What gets lost is chronology. Not because chronology is perfect — it isn't. But chronology is neutral. It says: this happened, in this order. A relevance score says: this happened, and we decided you should see it. That is a fundamental difference, and it is rarely communicated.
Algorithms are not neutral. The choice of optimization target is a political choice. Hiding the politics behind the math doesn't make the politics go away.
The quiet web has always been there
There are parts of the web that algorithms never reached. Personal blogs without tracking. RSS feeds that just show the newest post. Wikis that document without optimizing. Archives that demand no interaction. Static sites that don't track who you are. Forums whose only metric is the date of the last reply.
This quiet web hasn't disappeared. It has just become invisible — because most people experience the web through surfaces that platforms control, and platforms are tuned to engagement. The web itself is bigger than its platforms. But you have to actively go there.
The infrastructure is still maintained: feedly, NetNewsWire, RSS-readers that aggregate without ranking. Static-site generators have a renaissance (Hugo, Eleventy, Astro). The IndieWeb community keeps publishing specifications. Mastodon and Bluesky offer chronological-by-default feeds. The pieces exist. They just don't get the surface area.
What algorithm-freedom actually costs
Here's the honest part: a web without an algorithm isn't automatically better. Chronology means noise. No curation means you have to curate yourself. No relevance score means you'll wade through irrelevant content on the way to what you wanted.
That's the real trade-off. Algorithms solve a real problem — information overload. The question is who designs the solution, against what target, and accountable to whom. Engagement-maximization-optimized- for-the-platform's-attention-economy is one specific answer. It is not the only possible answer.

What that means — and what it doesn't
This isn't a claim that algorithms are wrong in general. Search without a ranking algorithm would be unusable. Navigation without recommendations would be expensive. Algorithms are tools — the problem isn't their existence, it's when they go invisible, when their target isn't communicated, and when there's no alternative.
weblin is an alternative to one specific thing: the algorithmically curated social feed. Not to everything. The extension doesn't replace your search engine, your news aggregator, your recommendation infrastructure. It adds something to the web that wasn't there: presence, without anyone deciding you should see it.
The quiet web isn't the better web. But it is a part of the web that's very loudly missing.
